What this plugin does
The Learning Catalogue block brings the LernHive learning catalogue to a Moodle Dashboard or the site front page. It shows either a compact preview of up to nine offerings or the complete catalogue with filter rail, quick picks and all results. On the front page it can also serve visitors without an account, if your platform opens its catalogue to the public.
On the page the block heading reads Learning Catalogue in its compact view; Add a block and the plugin list name it LernHive Learning Catalogue.
Who this is for
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Learner | Searches, filters and opens learning offerings |
| Platform administration | Places the block on the front page or a Dashboard and chooses the display mode |
| Site administrator | Switches the whole catalogue on or off |
Journeys by role
Learner: browse offerings
- Open the page that shows the Learning Catalogue block (Dashboard or front page).
- The compact preview shows up to nine offerings as cards with image, category, title, description and availability.
- Click a card to open the offering's detail page.
- If more results exist, click View the full learning catalogue below the cards.
Learner: filter and search
- Type a term into the search field (Search…); suggestions appear while you type.
- Use the further filters next to it — drop-downs, date ranges (… from / … to) or pill groups with an All option. Which filters exist depends on the installed LernHive plugins.
- Click Apply (magnifier icon). The page reloads with your filter.
- If nothing matches, the block shows "No learning offerings match your filter." Clear the filters and apply again.
Learner: add the block to your own Dashboard
- On your Dashboard, switch on Edit mode and choose Add a block → LernHive Learning Catalogue.
Platform administration: show the full catalogue on the front page
- On the site front page, switch on Edit mode and add LernHive Learning Catalogue, ideally in a full-width region.
- Open the block's settings and choose Display mode → Full catalogue view (filter rail, all results). Searching and filtering then stay on the front page, and the block header is hidden.
- Visitors can switch between cards and a month view; the month view needs Seminar Management.
- For visitors without an account, the platform's public catalogue setting must be on and Moodle's Force users to log in must be off.
Site administrator: switch the catalogue on or off
- Open Site administration → Plugins → Blocks → LernHive Learning Catalogue, section Catalogue visibility.
- Show the learning catalogue switches the catalogue off everywhere — this block, the LernHive navigation and the full catalogue page. Existing enrolments and course access stay unchanged.
Settings that matter
| Setting | Where | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Display mode | Block instance | Compact preview (default) or full catalogue view |
| Show the learning catalogue | Block settings page | Global catalogue switch |
| Make the learning catalogue public | LernHive general settings | Opens the catalogue to visitors without an account (only without Force users to log in) |
Which offerings appear is decided by the plugins that provide them and their visibility rules.
Limitations
- The compact preview shows at most nine offerings; full mode shows all.
- Filters and offerings depend on the installed provider plugins; without providers the block stays empty.
- Filtering reloads the page.
- One block per page; Dashboard and front page only.
- Visitors without an account and guests see content only while the public catalogue is on; Force users to log in always wins.
Troubleshooting
The block shows no offerings. → Clear the search field and filters, then click Apply. If it stays empty, no provider currently publishes offerings you may see.
The block is not on users' Dashboards. → It is never placed automatically. Add it to the default Dashboard, or let users add it themselves.
An offering is in the full catalogue but not in the block. → The compact preview stops at nine cards; use View the full learning catalogue.
Logged-out visitors do not see the block on the front page. → Check that the public catalogue is on and Force users to log in is off. On Moodle 5.2 also check Enable Home (enablemyhome): while it is off, Moodle sends logged-out visitors from the front page to the login page.
The block renders nothing for anyone. → Show the learning catalogue is switched off.
