LernHive Care

Care shows trainers who in their courses needs attention right now, based on the predictions Moodle's own learning analytics already produce, and lets them act from the same page: message the learner, offer an appointment, add a note, mark the signal as handled. Learners get their own view of the same signals in friendly wording, with a next step and a direct line to their trainer. Care computes no risk of its own and never acts automatically.

What this plugin does

Care shows trainers who in their courses needs attention right now, based on the predictions Moodle's own learning analytics already produce, and lets them act from the same page: message the learner, offer an appointment, add a note, mark the signal as handled. Learners get their own view of the same signals in friendly wording, with a next step and a direct line to their trainer. Care computes no risk of its own and never acts automatically.

Who this is for

RoleWhat they do
LearnerSee own course signals on For me, continue the course, message the trainer, send an update
TrainerOpen My courses, drill into a course, message learners, offer appointments, add notes, mark signals handled, acknowledge support requests
Platform administrationMaintain the site-wide and course Message templates
Site administrator (eLeDia)Enable Moodle learning analytics and its models; adjust the Care settings

Access is capability-based: the trainer pages require local/lernhive_care:viewcockpit and Moodle's moodle/analytics:listinsights in the course (both granted to the teacher, editing teacher and manager roles by default); acting requires local/lernhive_care:intervene; the learner view requires local/lernhive_care:viewown (every logged-in user); templates require local/lernhive_care:manage (Moodle's Manager role).

Core concepts

  • Signal — one current Moodle prediction about a learner in a course, for example "has not accessed the course recently" or "at risk of dropping out".
  • Level — High when a learner carries several signal families, a mix of static and model-based signals, or a strong model score; Medium otherwise. Trainers may additionally see the model score of machine-learning models; static models show no score.
  • Handled — a trainer has marked a learner's current signals as handled or not applicable. Every trainer of the course sees the same state; a newer prediction re-opens it.
  • Update — a learner's reply on a course card: All good, pausing on purpose, On it, just need time or I need support, with an optional note.
  • Care timeline — per learner and course: signals, interventions, updates and appointment activity.

Journeys by role

Trainer: find who needs attention

  1. Open Care in the launcher, or use the Care section on the Dashboard.
  2. My courses ("Who needs attention right now?") lists one card per course with signals: how many of the enrolled learners are affected, how many are high and how many are new since your last visit. Enrolled trainers are not counted as learners. Courses without signals are collapsed under All quiet.
  3. Select a card. The course page lists every learner with a signal — support requests first, then by level — with the signal names, the level and the main reason inline.

Trainer: act on a signal

  1. On the course page use the icons of a row:
    • Message … opens Moodle's message dialog for the learner.
    • Mark … as handled and Mark … as not applicable record Moodle's own insight actions; Report the prediction for … as incorrect is offered for machine-learning models only.
    • Details in Moodle insights and Outline report open Moodle's pages.
    • Add a course note for … saves a public Moodle course note (when notes are enabled and you may manage notes).
    • Open the Care timeline for … shows signals, interventions and updates with links to activity, grade and completion reports.
  2. Tick several rows and use Message selected or Mark selected handled. Choose a message template before opening the message dialog to prefill it; Moodle sends the message.
  3. Handled learners move to the bottom with the tag Handled by … on … and no longer count on the Dashboard. Every trainer of the course sees the same state; Moodle's own insight action is recorded for the trainer who clicked.

Trainer: offer an appointment

  1. On the course page choose Offer an appointment to … on one row, or select several rows and choose Offer appointment to selected.
  2. Pick one of your enabled Availability options for this course and click Send invitation. Each learner receives their own booking invitation; booking, confirmation and calendar entries are handled by Appointments.
  3. The course page shows Invited, awaiting response, Appointment …, Appointment completed or Did not attend.

The offer action appears only when Appointments is installed and you have an enabled availability for the course. Appointments you hold with colleagues' learners are not shown in this column yet.

Trainer: respond to a support request

  1. When a learner sends I need support, their row moves to the top of the course page and a must-do row appears on your Dashboard. Only trainers who can open that course in Care see it; you also receive a message from the learner and can answer by e-mail.
  2. Choose Acknowledge support request from … once the teaching team has taken it up. The request leaves the must-do list, stays in the timeline and the learner sees a neutral confirmation. A newer request appears again automatically.

Learner: see your own signals

  1. Open Care in the primary navigation (under Learn) or the Care section of the Dashboard. You land on For me.
  2. Each course with a signal shows a status — Let's get started, We missed you or Worth staying with it — one sentence why, and the buttons Continue … and Message … (your trainer). Without signals you see All good.
  3. Under Your update for this course choose All good, pausing on purpose, On it, just need time or I need support, optionally Add a note (optional, up to 300 characters), and click Send update. The update goes to that course's teaching team and never changes a Moodle prediction.
  4. How Care works explains which models are active, what they look at, who sees the signals, what Care keeps in its per-course history and for how many months.

Platform administration: maintain message templates

  1. In Care, open the settings cog and choose Message templates.
  2. Click Add template or edit an existing one; a template is site-wide or limited to one course. A course template with the same purpose and name takes precedence over the site template.
  3. Save — "Template saved." English and German defaults are included.

Site administrator: make Care show data and adjust it

  1. Site administration › Advanced features: enable Enable analytics.
  2. Site administration › Analytics › Analytics models: enable at least one enrolment-based model, for example Students who have not accessed the course recently (the shipped static models need no training).
  3. Let the scheduled task Predict models run. Courses need a start date. Every Care page explains which of these steps is still missing.
  4. Adjust Care in Site administration › Plugins › Local plugins › Care (see Settings that matter).

Settings that matter

All settings belong to the site administrator:

SettingDefaultEffect
Enable CareonSwitches every Care surface on or off
Score threshold for "high"0.80Model score from which a single signal counts as high
Signals for "high"2Number of concurrent signal families from which a learner is high
Merge overlapping access signalsonCounts "never accessed" and "not accessed recently" as one family
Show model score to trainersonSecondary percentage for machine-learning models
Enable the learner view "For me"onLearner view, Dashboard learner rows and the learner entry in the primary navigation
Dashboard rows5Maximum rows of the Care section on the Dashboard
Reply notification window60 minutesRepeated updates of the same learner in a course within this time send no new notice
Care history retention12 monthsEnded courses count from course end; other courses from each log row

Limitations

  • Care shows Moodle's predictions only. Without enabled analytics, enabled models and a completed prediction run there is nothing to show.
  • The handled state is shared by the course's trainers; Moodle's own insight action is recorded only for the trainer who clicked.
  • The course page has no filters and no export yet.
  • Appointments are managed in the separate Appointments plugin; the status column shows only appointments you host.
  • Learners do not see due activities or a booking button on For me yet; Moodle's own My insights page is linked instead, and appointments are booked from the invitation.
  • Trainers assigned at category level without a course enrolment are not included, as in Moodle's own insight notifications.
