What this plugin does
The LernHive Snack format is a course format for short, lightweight learning units — "Snacks" with an expected effort of roughly 10 to 30 minutes. A Snack is one list of at most three activities, without sections, so it stays small, linear and easy to finish in one sitting.
Who this is for
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Learner | Works through a Snack in one short session |
| Trainer | Creates a Snack in ContentHub and adds up to three activities |
| Site administrator (eLeDia) | Keeps the format enabled; Snacks are offered in the LXP flavour |
Core concepts
Snack
A Moodle course that uses the LernHive Snack format. A Snack should stay a 10–30 minute unit and must not grow into full course complexity.
Snack rules
- One list, no sections. The Snack shows its activities as one list under Snack overview. There is no Add section and no course index.
- At most three activities. Hidden activities and text and media areas count too. Once the Snack holds three activities, Add an activity or resource and Duplicate disappear. A fourth activity cannot be saved.
- No subsections. A subsection would add a section, so it cannot be added to a Snack.
- Created in ContentHub. A Snack is created with the Snack option of Create Course in ContentHub. The Snack format cannot be selected in the course settings of other courses.
Trainers can optionally enter the expected Snack duration (minutes). It is shown once in the Snack overview header.
Journeys by role
Learner: work through a Snack
- Open the Snack from My courses or a course link.
- Work through the activities from top to bottom — a Snack is meant to be completed in one short session.
Trainer: create a Snack
- Open ContentHub in the launcher, choose Create Course and then Create a Snack.
- Enter the Snack title, a Course short name, the Category, a Description and, optionally, the Snack duration (minutes).
- Select Create Snack. The Snack is created hidden and opens in the course wizard.
- The course wizard shows the short Snack checklist: once the Snack holds at least one activity (Content available, at most three), select Publish Snack.
Trainer: change an existing Snack
- To add a new activity to a full Snack, delete or move out one of its activities first.
- A Snack's settings keep the Snack format. You can switch a Snack to another format there; after saving, the Snack format is no longer offered for it.
Settings that matter
The plugin has no site-level settings. A Snack has one course setting: the optional Snack duration (minutes).
Limitations
- Snacks created before the Snack rules keep their content. Sections with content are shown below the Snack list; users who can manage activities see a warning that the Snack exceeds the rules. New activities can be added again once the Snack has at most two.
- The rules apply to the activity form, the activity chooser, duplication and the course editor. Restoring a backup or importing course content into a Snack is not limited.
- There is no drag-and-drop upload and no bulk editing on a Snack page.
- The format does not change Moodle roles or permissions in any way.
Troubleshooting
"Add an activity or resource" is missing in a Snack. → The Snack already holds three activities. Remove one to add another.
A warning says "This Snack has more than 3 activities or has sections." → The Snack was created before the Snack rules. Its content stays visible. Reduce it to at most two activities to add new ones, or move the content into a regular course.
"LernHive Snack format" is missing in the course settings. → Intended: Snacks are created in ContentHub with Create Course → Snack.
The Snack option is missing in ContentHub. → Snacks are created only in the LXP flavour. There, creating Snacks needs the ContentHub course creation permission and, where Explore is installed, the permission to create Snacks. A site administrator also checks that the format is enabled under Site administration → Plugins → Course formats.
