Start a video call
- Open a conversation in the message drawer or on the messages page.
- Select the camera button Video call next to the conversation menu.
- Confirm Start video call. The call opens in a new tab; everyone in the conversation gets a message with the link.
You can also open another person's profile and choose Video call.
If a call in the conversation is still running, the button says Join video call and takes you into it without a new message.
Join a video call
Select the link in the message Video call started — Join video call. Before your first call you see a short notice: the call runs on BigBlueButton, your name is passed to the video service, nothing is recorded. Confirm to continue.
Only people in the conversation can join. If the call has ended, you can start a new one.
For administrators
Video calls need:
- the BigBlueButton activity enabled (Site administration → Plugins → Activity modules),
- your own or a hosted BigBlueButton server (server URL and secret in the BigBlueButton settings) — the public test server is for testing only,
- Moodle messaging enabled.
Then switch on Enable video calls in Site administration → Plugins → Local plugins → Video call. The page shows the status and what is missing. Show the button in conversations can be switched off; then calls start from the profile only. The role capability Start and join video calls from conversations lets you take calls away from a role; Moderate video calls of course-group conversations is given to teachers by default.
